A fistula is an irregular tube-like connection that occurs inside the body between two organs or arteries. Fistulas can develop between the original aorta and the duodenum or jejunum, or between a prosthetic aortic graft and any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Although the other types of fistulas listed above can normally be treated as an outpatient procedure, aortoenteric fistulas are surgical emergencies. Fistulas frequently develop as a result of a bodily injury or inflammation. Ulcers arise as a result of inflammation and might spread to another part of the body. This helps drain pus from an affected location by creating a channel. Antibiotics and other treatments may help some fistulas heal, but most require surgery. Fistulotomy and seton surgery are the two main surgical methods for treating an anal fistula. A surgeon performs a fistulotomy when a fistula is sliced along its whole length and heals into a flat scar. A surgeon will implant a piece of fine surgical thread within the fistula during seton surgery to assist drain any infection and allowing it to heal.
