A fistula is an uneven tube-like connection between two organs or arteries that arises inside the body. Fistulas can form between the aorta and the duodenum or jejunum, or between a prosthetic aortic graft and any section of the digestive tract. Aortoenteric fistulas are surgical emergencies, unlike the other types of fistulas listed above, which may usually be treated as outpatient surgery. Fistulas are most commonly caused by bodily harm or inflammation. Ulcers are caused by inflammation and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body. Establishing a channel, this aids in the drainage of pus from an infected area. Some fistulas may heal with antibiotics and other therapies, but the majority require surgery. The two main surgical approaches for treating an anal fistula are fistulotomy and seton surgery. When a fistula is sliced along its whole length and heals into a flat scar, a surgeon conducts a fistulotomy. During seton surgery, a surgeon will insert a small surgical thread into the fistula to help drain any infection and allow it to heal.
