Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, are skin and underlying tissue damage caused by continuous skin pressure. Bedsores are particularly common on skin that covers bony body parts including the heels, ankles, hips, and tailbone. Medical issues that limit their ability to shift positions or force them to spend the majority of their time in a bed or chair put them at risk for bedsores. Bedsores can take hours or days to develop. The majority of sores heal with therapy, but others never do. There are things you may do to help avoid and heal bedsores. Bedsores are classified into stages based on their depth, severity, and other factors. Changes in skin pigmentation to a deep injury involving muscle and bone are all examples of skin and tissue damage. If you see signs of bedsore, shift positions to reduce pressure on the affected area. Contact our doctor if you don't see any change in 24 to 48 hours.
